Notice of Revision to the Doctoral Qualifying Examination Guidelines

 

 To enhance the purpose and effectiveness of the qualifying examination, the following

revisions have been made:

■ Basis: Faculty Meetings (2024-8, 2025-2)

Effective Date: Students entering in the Spring semester of the 2025 academic year

 (or candidates taking the exam in January/February 2026)

■ Purpose of Revision: To strengthen the connection between the Doctoral Qualifying

   Examination (Major/Expertise Evaluation) and dissertation research

■ Direction of Revision: Enhanced evaluation of expertise through the Dissertation Research

   Proposal

■ Examination Method: Document review and appointment of individual evaluation

    committees per student

■ Eligibility: Completion of at least 3 credits after admission to the doctoral program

   (students on academic probation in the previous semester are automatically disqualified)

■ Scoring: Total of 100 points (Basic Evaluation: 30 points, Major Evaluation: 70 points) /

    A recommendation for passing requires a score of 70 or above

■ Basic Evaluation (30 pts): Academic performance (20 pts), research capability (10 pts)

■ Major Evaluation (70 pts): Dissertation Research Proposal (in English, ~ 15 pages)

■ Final Deliberation: Departmental Doctoral Qualifying Examination Committee

■ Expected Outcome: Promote challenging and creative dissertation research in connection

     with the preliminary doctoral dissertation review
