Polymer- or plastic- based microdevices are indispensable to recent advances in biomedical analysis. In particular, they have been adapted in many microfluidic platforms owing to their low cost in material and fabrication and versatility in preparing complex microsacle structures.

Today, plastic devices, mostly probably micro components, microfluidic parts, and bio-microsystem, will be discussed as a substitute for the silicon- or glass- based devices in a clinical diagnosis and biochemical analysis, with many merits, such as low cost for disposable use, superior biocompatibility, and other special features. First, the extensive details of polymer microfabrications, including casting, hot-embossing, and injection molding, will be discussed. Second, some polymer microfluidic applications will be introduced., and the third, new approaches for the next generation polymer microdevices, including the wafer-level fabricated micro devices on COC (cyclo-olefin copolymer) substrate, and new fluidic devices in ETRI, will be discussed.
