The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Brain

ABSTRACT

The brain possesses unique structural and functional characteristics that fundamentally distinguish it from other organs, including complex neural circuitry, excitability, synaptic plasticity, and multilayered protective systems such as the blood–brain barrier. Understanding brain function requires integration across multiple hierarchical levels—from genes and proteins to synapses, neural circuits, networks, and behavior. Bridging the continuum from gene to cognition provides a conceptual framework for treatment mapping, enabling the development of targeted interventions including gene therapy, RNA interference, protein therapeutics, cellular therapies, and circuit-level neuromodulation. In this talk, some tips for exploring the brain will be discussed.
