Highly Sensitive Biological Detections Using Nanoscale Optical Technology

Metal nanoparticles play an important role in nanobiotechnology. Depending on their chemical composition, their optical properties have garnered much attention in biological studies approaching molecular dimensions. For example, semiconductor quantum dots, which provide tunable and narrow emission bands with high photo-stability, can be used as effective fluorescent labels for cellular imaging at molecular level. In addition, bio-functionalized gold nanoparticles can successfully be used for highly sensitive biological assays such as DNA hybridization or biomarker detection in single cells. In this presentation, various applications of highly sensitive optical detections using metal nanoparticles will be discussed. The corresponding biological systems for nanoparticle applications include cancer biomarkers inside breast cancer cells and multiplex DNA oligonucleotides in a PDMS microfluidic channel.
