4. Abstract

Psychiatric disorders are debilitating conditions that are enormously burdensome in terms of impact on the quality of life of the patient and societal cost. Neuropsychiatric disorders are postulated to have a neurodevelopmental etiology. Therefore, it is essential to understand the role of risk genes in neural development and how they causally contribute to relevant pathology. Disrupted-in-schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) is a well-known psychiatric susceptibility gene. In this seminar, I will discuss the role of the interaction between DISC1 and Ndel1 in regulating cell cycle progression of neural stem cell in developing brain using human forebrain-specific organoids. I will also discuss how DISC1 regulates the presynaptic connectivity and controls fine tuning of excitation/inhibition balance at the molecular and circuitry level during adult hippocampal neurogenesis.
