Abstract
Biology is the science of living things, one of the most complex systems in nature. Classical approaches of science such as reductive reasoning has encountered serious shortcomings in understanding and grasping the whole picture of the complex system. A new field in biology called systems biology aims at system-level understanding of the biological systems. The biological systems range from ecosystems to the system of reactions that form cellular biochemistry. Cells are the basic unit of living things, and the complex protein interactions provide core pipelines for inter- and intra-cellular communications, language of the cells. Therefore, it is important for us to decode the signals between various types of cells in tissues or organs, and inside the cells (from receptors to nucleus) to regulate the expression of various genes for system-level understanding of the biological system. Here, we will discuss about two examples of intercellular interactions responsible for neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s Disease and intracellular signaling for ‘to-be-or-not-to-be’ decision.
